John 20:19-31 – Life In His Name

Titus 1:1-16

John 20:19-31

Images of living a good life?

Decisions
(career,  spouse, family, house size, car type, holiday destinations, retirement plans, values of what is good and what is bad, decisions about who or what is central in making YOUR decisions)

How can we ever live the good life?

Thinking about life
John 1:4, “in Jesus there is life and that life is the light of man”

John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life”.

John 10:10, “I have come that you may have life and have it to the full.”

John 14:6, “I am the way the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me”

Responding with belief
John 20: 25 … If I do not see and touch I will not believe.

John 20:28, “My Lord and My God”

Belief and Life for us today

Question 1: Do you really believe that Jesus is the Christ the Son of God?

Question 2: Do you trust that Jesus can deliver on his promise to give you ‘life in all its fullness’?

A focus on Mission
Verse 21, “As the Father has sent me, I am sending you”.

Verse 29 – belief founded on seeing and touching

Verse 31 – Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God so they might believe and have life in his name.

Question: Are we to be people who believe in Jesus and who have an evangelistic focus on telling people about Jesus?

John 20:22
“and with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit”.”
… symbolically pointing forward to the immanent receiving of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost

John 20:23
“If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them they are not forgiven”.
… pointing people towards the forgiveness that can only be found in Jesus and calling them to belief in Jesus.
